Inexpensive Fall Garland

I actually made this fall garland right before Irma hit but was not able to post about it. It will be awhile before I put it back outside. Although our house had no damage, our yard is littered with leaves, branches and topple trees. We had so much shade and now, none really. There were some tornadoes that went through which might explain the extensive damage.

This was such a simple garland to make and I had everything on hand. It is a great way to use up scraps of material and you can make it as long as you want.

I had lots of wooden spools that I wanted to use. If you don't have any wooden spools, you could use wooden beads.

Next I gathered up some dried leaves, cinnamon sticks and some thread.

I needed some fabric so I gathered up some fall fabric scraps left over from other projects and some ribbon.

Now lets put it all together:
1. I made a loop with one of my pieces of fabric. I cut a piece about 7-8 inches long.

This would be my loop on the end. I tied it in a knot.

2. I used a large eyed needle with some thread and put it through the knot on the end of my loop. I left the thread long enough so I could add all of my items for the garland.

3. I cut (I actually tore some of the fabric pieces) into 4-5 inch strips. Then I just tied them around the thread and made a knot. I added three of these fabric knots. You could always add more.

4. I added my leaves next. Not sure how many I put on, 10-12. I just threaded them on.

5. Next came the cinnamon sticks. I first tried to poke a hole in them which broke the cinnamon stick in half so I used my drill press to make the holes. You could wrap the thread around the cinnamon stick or glue it on.

5. I added some pieces of lace next and then the wooden spool of thread.

6. The lace strips were added on either side of the wooden spools. Then I started the process all over again with strips of fabric.

7. On each of the wooden spools, I tied a piece of ribbon and hot glued a tiny pumpkin onto it.

My fall garland was finally done and ready to be hung outside. I added it to my Welcome sign to get a photo. I knew that it would have to come in before Irma came. Not sure where it will go later.
