DIY Sled Tray
DIY Sled Tray
If you are stopping by from the Winter Wonderland Tray Tour, I hope you enjoyed it. There were so many wonderful tray ideas featured.
Mine started when I saw a sled and wanted one for my table. Now to figure out how to make one.
I started with some pallet boards that I had cut this summer. We didn't take out any nails, just cut the boards in between the slats. I knew these would be the perfect size.
First I sanded the boards. I picked three boards for the sled.
Next, I needed something to make the rounded ends. I tried several things before I used the lid off of the ice cream jar. I marked them.
Hubby, then used his gig saw to cut the rounded ends.
Since I wanted the middle board to be longer than the two sides, we cut them shorter. The middle board is 18 3/4 inches long. The side boards are 17 3/4 inches long.
That was the easy part, now the runners. Since we didn't have a pattern, I had to think how long to make it. I wanted it to be long enough to extend out the back and curve in the front. The runner is 21 inches from the back to the curve.
We used the base of a triangle square for the width of the runner, which is 3/4 inch wide. For the curve part, I used the ice cream lid again, to make the curve. Hubby cut the runner on the circular saw until he reached the curve and then cut that part out with the gig saw.
We cut 2 cross pieces that are 3/4 wide. I sanded them and then painted the runners and cross pieces a barn red that I had left over from and project.
Once everything was painted, we nailed the cross pieces to the runners, making sure all was square.
Then we added the top sled boards that I stained walnut and a coat of varnish..
I did purchase 3 feet of rope from Ace Hardware. We drilled holes in the two side boards and then added knots on top.
And there you have it, a DIY sled. You can use it for so many decorations. Make a bigger one and put it outside.
