Building and Styling a Stool

Building and Styling a Stool

About 4 years ago, hubby and I went to an antiques fair and I saw a wooden stool there that I loved. I had never seen anything like it, but it was sold.

I took a picture of it and thought I would make it some day. Well, some day came last week. I was cleaning my craft room when I found the picture I had printed out.  We had no measurements so I just began thinking how long and high I wanted it and off we went.

Here it is finished:

We needed some boards and we had plenty. Our friend bought a house in Georgia that was built in 1908 to use in his new home. He had extra boards and gave them to me. They are 10 inches wide and 3/4 inch thick.

I wanted to keep them just as they were. I didn't want to put them through the planner. I didn't even sand them except around the edges.

I decided on 20 inches long and about 18 inches high. We didn't want to waste these boards so we used some other ones to make a template because we weren't sure what the angle would be.

The back legs were straight so hubby went to attach them to the top with his nail gun. The nails went at various angles. That was not going to work - the boards are too tough. So we had to predrill and then use screws.

After some playing with the cut we found 22 degree cut would work. These pieces would be in the front. Hubby also put some supporting pieces so he could screw the side pieces to.

We added the front pieces to the top. We had to add some braces so the shelf could sit on them.

I didn't get pictures on adding the supports but here is the bottom shelf. Since the bottom shelf was larger than the top, and the boards were tongue and grove, we cut a piece to fit into the bottom piece.

We didn't even nail the bottom shelf since it fit in nicely.

The place the stool outside on my closed in lanai.

I went through my stash and garage and found some pieces that might work on the stool.

I always have old books around and so I placed a white pitcher with some babies breath on it. I grabbed a couple other things including
a vintage tin metal stove pipe cover chimney flue (the yellow piece in the center). I had the scales and porcelain pot so I added some items to the pot.

In the basket on the bottom, I placed a small dish that was my grandmother's and some wooden cake molds I got when I was overseas.

The small striped piece in the jar is from the top of a crochet mallet.

I also added some tin spice containers.

I love how it turned out. Hubby said he would not make another one out of this wood. I still have projects planned for some of this wood, so we will see.
