Inexpensive Candy Garland

Last year I created some lollipop decor for Christmas. They were made from pool noodles. Here is one of them that I made and you can find all of the details to make these and more here.

This year I decided to make a candy garland to hang above the garage and of course I had to make some candies from pool noodles.

Eclectic Red Barn: Candies from pool noodles

I could have made the garland using all pool candies but I used some other items I had to make other "candy" pieces - gum drops and candy canes.

Lets see how I made this inexpensive candy garland.

1. I gathered some green garland. You can use two garlands from the Dollar Tree and twist them together. I purchased this garland at the craft store at the end of the season last year for $1.50 each. (I used two of them)

2. Grab a pool noodle and a piece of PVC pipe. (Dogs like to help)

3. Cut the pool noodle in half and then cut the half lengthwise in half. You can see how I did this on the Lollipop Decor.

4. Now roll one of the half pool noodle up and add some hot glue to secure it. I like to tie it with an extra large twistie tie until it holds.

5. I purchased shrink wrap basket wrap from the Dollar tree and cut it in half. I wasn't sure if it would still shrink when cut but it did. Wrap the shrink wrap the pool noodle and twist the ends. I wrap a twistie tie on the ends.

6. Take the PVC pipe and cut in 6-8 inch lengths. I taped mine off and painted it to make stripes, but you could wrap red tape to make the stripes.
The candy canes are straight with no curve on top but from a distance, they look great.

7. I made gum drops from plastic containers. This was from potato salad from the grocery store.

8. I painted the inside green and one I painted blue. Once it was painted, I added Mod Podge to the outside and sprinkled it with green and blue glitter.

9. I had some plastic bulbs that I also got at the end of the year last year.

I found green and red nail polish at the Dollar Tree and poured that inside the bulb and swirled it around. Once it was all coated, I turned it upside down into a plastic container with paper towels in it to allow the excess nail polish to run out. I let this sit overnight to make sure it was dry.

10. Now it is time to put to all together. I had four pool candies, two gum drops, two plastic bulbs and the candy canes.

I also added bows and a couple other plastic bulbs.

This garland was long enough to go across the top of our two car garage. You could make yours as long or short as you want.

I did not add any lights to mine, but you could. I already had these snow flakes so they light up at night and the candy garland is seen during the day.

  4. Oh this is different Beverly! I love it! What innovative ways you made the candies...I never would have thought of making them out of a plastic container, but I can see it works & shows up well from afar! Good job!
