Grandma's Joy - Watching Grandson Play Hockey at Lake Placid

I love being a grandma and this past weekend was no exception. I came to Vermont to stay with my grand kids while my son and daughter-in-law had to go to Georgia. Before I arrived, my son wanted to know if I could take my grandson to Lake Placid for the CAN/AM Hockey tournament. Of course was my response.

It was like a mini vacation for the three of us, my grand daughter, grand son and me. We took the ferry from Vermont to Plattsburgh, NY and then down to Lake Placid.

The tournament was held in the sports complex where the 1980 and 1932 Winter Olympics were held. It was so exciting to be there. The complex was amazing and the town is quaint and so picturesque.

My grandson is a goalie and I have to admit that he is awesome. (I'm not too partial, right! That's what Grandma's do)

Here he is playing on the same rink as the one where the USA beat the world champions - the Soviet Union, 4 to 3 in the 1980 Olympics.

He will be 12. They grow up so fast.

Eclectic Red Barn: Grandson blocking a shot
Here he just blocked a shot. In this game they lost and my grandson was feeling bad because he let shots get by. That was Friday.

I gave him a pep talk before his game on Saturday and said, just do your best. They played their last game in the 1932 Olympic arena.

Duncan play so amazing. The crowd, mainly all the parents of the kids on the team was going crazy. He was on fire and of the 20 shots to the goalie, only two got in. To put it in perspective, we had 9 shots against their goalie and scored twice.

I didn't get a lot of pictures, because I was too into the game to take them.

What joy I felt watching him and listening to all the other parents cheer him on and then congratulate him when the game was over. The team did so great.

His coach sent an email to my son telling him how incredible he played.

I was the only grandparent there and it was so wonderful to be able to share that experience with him. Since we live so far apart, I often miss out on many of their activities. However, this is one that I will never forget.

While my grand son enjoy spending time with his fellow team players, I enjoyed spending time with my grand daughter. We shopped, had lunch and walked around the town. I don't usually get a lot of one on one time.

Here were were, having lunch while it is snowing outside. She too is a goalie like here brother, although she does figure skating as well. She is 9.

I guess hockey is in their blood. The main difference is I like warm weather, and they like the cold. Not their Grandma!

I love being a grandma, I know that most grandma's do. We have so many fabulous memories of our kids, and then we get to have all new ones with the grand kids. It doesn't get any better than that!
