We didn't have a lot of money to buy store bought goodies, but we always had some kind of dessert. That is probably why I still love desserts. Wish I didn't.
We were so use to having homemade that one day I asked if we could please buy something store bought. I remember watching the Nickles bakery truck going buy. (Now I am really telling my age). Once we were allowed to buy a breakfast goodie from the Nickles truck. I think it was some maple coffee cake. We thought we had died and gone to heaven. How crazy we were.
At Christmas, we made tons of cookies. She gave them to neighbors and family. We always made sugar cookies. It was my grandmother's recipe for these soft and yummy sugar cookies. She would double the recipe which made about 100 cookies and then let us decorate them. By the time we finished decorating all of them, we hated those cookies. lol!
When my sister and I were little, we would slap on all this frosting and then load up with sprinkles, colored sugar, and those silver hard things that would break your teeth if you had too many on a cookie and of course we did.
We would make one for our Dad and when he came home gave it to him to eat. He would look at this thing with all the frosting and stuff on top and say, "yum". Then he would eat it, because we were standing there waiting. It wasn't until we grow up that we realized how bad they must have been. He never complained, just ate.
Have you ever decorated cookies that way or allowed your children to decorate that way? I think there is something about wanting to add all you can to the cookie.
I don't make very many cookies these days. My husband is not a cookie person but does like pies and cakes. I usually make some special candy to give at his work.
These Christmas Chocolate Chip cookies went to work. I did keep a few for myself. I wanted to try the Nestle Toll House Christmas Chips. Nestle's are the only chips I use. I try others but always come back to these.
All I did was add the new Christmas chocolate chip cookies to my Chocolate Chip Recipe which you can find here.
Somehow Christmas is not Christmas without cookies, at least that is what I think. Hope your Christmas is filled with lots of love and special holiday cookies.
